EJ Smith Discusses What the Eagles Next Move Is
The Eagles lost the Super Bowl. And then over the next two days, both their Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator took jobs elsewhere. So where do the Eagles go from here? EJ Smith from the Philly Inquirer joined us to discuss the options to replace both coordinators, to review the loss, their priority-free agents, and more. Here is what EJ Smith had to say.
On Who Might Replace Jonathan Gannon
“When you talk to members of the Eagles’ secondary, they really do talk about how impressive Dennard Wilson is… He’s an ambitious guy. He didn’t make any bones about it during training camp, he wants to be a head coach, he wants to be a defensive coordinator. He has aspirations to ascend through the coaching ranks. I think the Eagles are probably even more prepared to replace Gannon than they are with Steichen. Gannon was really deep into the Houston Texans Head Coaching vacancy last year. They kind of vetted their options then. I could see Dennard Wilson being the leading internal candidate…
When your offense and defense are top 5 in the league, it is kind of easy to look within with your coaching promotions… They have some really effective internal candidates for these jobs.”
On What Free Agent is Most Important For Them To Resign…
“The history of the Eagles would suggest Javon Hargrave will be the top priority. I am curious to see what he gets. There are teams that need DT help, with a lot of cap space. Chicago Bears come to mind. If his market starts to get competitive, it may be hard for the Eagles to justify signing him. His age is a factor there. Maybe it will scare some teams off, or maybe it will factor more in for the Eagles. But Javon Hargrave is the guy I would initially say they will value highly.
But I’ll be honest, CJ Gardner Johnson and the role he plays on the backend, I think that is invaluable… If his market isn’t as robust as the Safety market was last year, or even if it is, I can see them making an effort to bring him back… Watching this team all year, and seeing how important Gardner Johnons is to the versatility that the Eagles have on the backend, I think he will be a priority for them.”
