Yesterday, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the brakes off of the New York Giants in the Meadowlands with a commanding 48-22 victory. Pretty much every single player wearing midnight green had an exceptional individual game, and that normally means a good team result is to follow. Some games, though, not every single player is playing at their best. That’s when you need a transcendent player to rise to the occasion. Jalen Hurts has been a part of both of those types of games this season, and has excelled in both scenarios. When the Eagles are going at their best, it’s because Hurts is lighting the world on fire from the QB position. When the Eagles are at their worst, they’re winning tight games because when the chips are down, #1 just refuses to allow this team to lose football games. He has already been in the conversation for MVP for months now, but the past couple weeks have cemented where he stands in that race; it’s right on his jersey every Sunday.
Just look at the past 2 weeks of Eagles’ offensive production. It’s rare for any team to gain 450+ yards on offense and score 5+ touchdowns at any point in a season. The Eagles and Jalen Hurts have done that in BACK TO BACK WEEKS! That’s mind blowing proficiency on the offensive side of the ball. On top of the heater the birds have been on, they’re 12-1, the best team in football. If you view MVP as an award for the best player on the best team, that’s a point in favor of Mr. Hurts. Wait, but what about Hurts’ individual accomplishments Connor? I’m glad you asked! Hurts leads the NFL in passer rating at 108.4, TD/INT ratio, is 6th in rushing TDs IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE, and obviously 1st for QBs, and is top 5 in numerous other stats. The individual numbers are unreal to go along with the best record in football and the versatile way the Eagles offense is getting the job done.
So then who am I trying to convince? Seems pretty clear cut, right? Well, not as much as it probably should be. The modern NFL revolves around the passing game, and the MVP normally goes to the best passing QB. Hurts is only 10th in the NFL in passing yards this season, and with Patrick Mahomes currently leading the league in that category, some still believe that he deserves to take home his 2nd MVP award this season. To those people, let me just say this: you are absolutely mistaken. Passing yards are cool, but MVP does not stand for Most Valuable Passer. It stands for Most Valuable Player, of course, and no one player has been more valuable than Jalen Hurts this season. There are still 4 more weeks to go of the regular season, but short of a complete collapse, the award should still belong to the Eagles signal caller. He has created the most total offense of any one player, and for the best team in football. This is about as cut and dry as it gets, and with a couple more weeks of this type of play, the Eagles will have their first NFL MVP in franchise history.
