Take your thoughts back to just five years ago. It was the middle of a glorious year, of course, for the Philadelphia Eagles, which ended in the team’s first-ever and only Super Bowl victory. The quarterback for that team was Carson Wentz, and after nine games the Eagles were 8-1, just like this year. And the talk began after nine games in 2017 that the Eagles just may be a Super Bowl contender (much like the talk of the team right now) and that Wentz was a serious MVP candidate (just like Jalen Hurts now).

So that compelled me to take a little deeper look at the numbers of those two quarterbacks through nine games. Of course, Hurts got hurt in Game 13 in 2017 after leading the team to an 11-2 record and many thought that he still should have/could have been named the league’s MVP.

But let’s get back to the nine-game stretch to begin the season.

Here are the numbers on Carson Wentz from 2017:

Comp: 176

Att: 291

Comp. perc.: 60.5%

Yards: 2,262

TD passes: 23

INT: 5

Rushing TD’s: 0

Jalen Hurts in 2022

Comp: 180

Att: 265

Comp. Perc: 67.9%

Yards: 2,217

TD passes: 14

INT: 3

Rushing TD’s: 7

Simply amazing how similar those numbers are. What does it all mean? Absolutely nothing. But it’s interesting that Hurts, rightfully questioned before the season whether he was the franchise quarterback moving forward, may just be having that MVP season.
