The Phillies season is over, which means our time with Jayson Stark is over too. But he joined one last time, to review the Phillies’ season, and preview the off-season. Here is what he had to say.
On Why the Phillies Collapsed Over the Last 3 Games
“There are two teams playing. The Astros are one of the behemoths of the sport. No matter what you think of the whole cheating thing in 2017, the Astros over the last 6 years are one of the greatest teams of modern times. I know no one roots for them. But there is no way around that reality… So why did the Phillies go 9 for their last 98? So much of it has to do with the fact the Astors have one of the greatest pitching staffs that any team has ever brought to the World Series.”
On The Phillies Upcoming Off-Season
“One thing I should say is I would never overreact to one week in October or one series that you lost. You should always react to what you saw all season. And Dave will do that. He has watched this really carefully. He knows what needs to be done. I hear a lot of Trae Turner talk. I am all in on signing Trae Turner. And I will tell you guys there are some interesting rumblings that he wants to be there. And with the new rules next season. the way they were constructed this year, it’s going to be hard to win with a team like that. It is going to be harder to get by if you are not really athletic, especially up the middle. And Turner is the perfect player for how teams will need to play. I think they will be very aggressive on him, and on the SS market.
If I were Dave, I would listen on Rhys Hoskins and Nick Castellanos. They might not be tradeable. There may not be enougb valkue there. But I would listen. I would not be surprised if he does that.
And you are going to need to rebuild the bullpen… They need to deepen that bullpen with big arms like the Astros rolled out there. And I think they need at least one starter. It wouldn’t shock me if Andrew Painter was on the roster out of Spring Training”
