With the Phillies facing off with the braves in the playoffs, the Flyers opening their season vs the Devils, the Sixers opening their season vs the Celtics, and the Eagles facing the Cowboys on Sunday night, you could call this rivalry week in Philly. And Andrew Salciunas decided to embrace that in The Audio Vault today. He pulled audio from great rivalry moments in Philly sports history. So here is the lineup for today’s Audio Vault, rivalry week edition.
Eagles vs Cowboys
For the Eagles-Cowboys portion of The Vault, Andrew went to the game where Jeff Garcia and the Eagles beat the Cowboys on Christmas Day, in Dallas’s own home, 23-7. It was quite the Christmas gift for Eagles fans, and even sweeter knowing that it ruined Christmas for all the weasel Cowboys Fans.
Having a good Flyers team is something we all miss, And we especially miss great Flyers-Penguins games. And one of the best moments in that rivalry was the Giroux Shift. It was game 6 in a playoff series between the two teams in 2012. The Flyers were up 3-2 but had dropped the last 2 games. After just recently coming back from down 3-0 in a series vs the Bruins, the Flyers were in danger of letting the same thing happen to them. But Claude Giroux was having none of that. In the opening moments of the game, he set the tone with an open-ice check on Sidney Crosby. And less than a minute later he blew the roof off the building by scoring a goal. The Flyers went on to win 5-1, and eliminate the Penguins.
There is no basketball team we hate more than the Celtics. Them being the winningest team in NBA history hurts. But the rivalry between the two teams has always been great even if the Celtics have the more impressive resume. And the hate between these two teams never boiled over more than when Dr.J and Larry Bird got into a legit fight on the court, with both being ejected. Andrew grabbed the audio from that brawl for today’s Vault.
There is a debate around our station about who we should hate more, the Giants or the Cowboys. You could argue the Eagles and the Giants have been closer rivals since the Andy Reid era. The Cowboys have sucked for most of that time, and the Giants were competitive for at least the first decade of this century. And one of the best moments in recent history was the Miracle At the Meadowlands 3.0, where DeSean Jackson returned a punt to walk off the game and complete an epic comeback. So of course Andrew played that punt return in today’s Audio Vault.
The Flyers-Rangers rivalry may not be as intense as the Penguins one, but there is no love lost between the two teams. And for this rivalry, Andrew pulled a moment from 2010 where the Flyers beat the Rangers in a shootout to clinch the playoffs in 2010.
This may be the rivalry most on the minds of Philly fans with the two competing in the playoffs right now. And with Shane Victorino throwing out the first pitch today, Andrew pulled a moment of his from 2008 where the Flying Hawaiian gunned out a runner at home to preserve Brad Lidge’s perfect season. And he also grabbed Rhys Hoskins Grand Slam against the Braves in the home opener of the 2019 season.
