See what was brewing with Jen Scordo today! Every day Jen shares 3 weird and interesting news stories. Today she had one about a report claiming beer can prevent dementia, someone tattooing their dog's ashes onto their skin, and a report that vegetarians are more likely to be depressed than meat eaters. Here are the stories from today.

Can Beer Prevent Dementia?

Beer drinkers rejoice! That beer you drink every night before bed may be benefiting your long-term health. Australian researchers did a study about the drinking habits of 25,000 people over 60. And the result showed a lower rate of dementia in people who claimed to drink two points a day. Those who said they drink two a day were found to be 1/3 less likely to be diagnosed with dementia. And those who didn't drink at all had the highest rates of dementia. Researchers did say however that while light drinking had its benefits for preventing dementia, heavy drinking is dangerous. But now red wine drinkers aren't the only ones who can call themselves healthy when they have a nightcap. Though the story about a beer shortage in an earlier What's Brewing with Jen may now be more dire given this study.

This led to the question on the show of what do you value more, your brain or your liver.

Using a Dog's Ashes For a Tattoo

We have heard of people getting their pet's likeness or name as a tattoo. But one heartbroken dog owner who recently lost their pooch decided to use the dog's ashes in the tattoo ink. Robyn Moscrop recently lost her Bull Terrier Bronson. And when he passed unexpectedly at 3 years old, she seemingly wanted to keep him close not only in spirit but to her person. So she got a tattoo of his face and mixed his ashes into the ink.

“Having his ashes on me means that he’s always going to be with me, no matter what. It’s not something I could lose or misplace, it’s always there. Seeing it when it was done was really emotional, I did have a cry.”

Vegetarians More Likely To Be Depressed

Eating a vegetarian diet may be good for your physical health, but is it good for your mental health? A new study out of Brazil found vegetarians are twice as likely to experience depressive episodes. They surveyed 14,216 participants aged 35 to 74 years over six months. Here were the findings.

“Depressive episodes are more prevalent in individuals who do not eat meat, independently of socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Nutrient deficiencies do not explain this association. The nature of the association remains unclear, and longitudinal data are needed to clarify causal relationship.”
