A “Season of Expectations” brings different challenges
We all could never have honestly expected that on January 11, 2021 after a (4-11-1) season that led to the firing of Doug Pederson a turnaround that happened this quickly. A combination of young players ascending, solid drafts and free agent signings have led to a year where the floor is a playoff berth and the ceiling can’t truly be determined…yet. A (3-0) start could light a fire of excitement in this fan base that might be unquenchable.
Just think back to a year ago. The Eagles were (1-1) and we were buckled in for what was supposed to be a bumpy ride. It definitely played out that way. At (2-5) the season was hanging in the balance and the entire offensive approach changed. What followed was a Cinderella type run vs a very weak schedule. It led to a (9-8) finish and a playoff punishment in Tampa Bay.
What that season did was amplify the expectations. Instead of a slow build, the fan base now wants nothing less than a division championship. I’m always wary of people changing timelines in business. Early success many times derails energy by expecting results earlier than should be demanded. If you don’t make the post season last year, you don’t have any pressure other than doing better than Year One. Thankfully, Nick Sirianni and his team are not shying away from the renewed pressures and seem to enjoy it. That is a great sign for future success.
Going down to Washington this weekend is a fantastic early season test. If you can start to distance yourself from the field in your own division and put up another conference win, the 2022 season will have the potential to be very special. Here’s how I see it going down;
Monday Night was easy. I don’t believe Sunday afternoon will be. I’m not going to be surprised if you see the Eagles trail a few times in the course of the afternoon. Carson will be a problem and the defense will save the day. The offense will sputter at times. The run dominates and manages to run out the clock.
The Eagles win 27-23 in an angst filled afternoon and move to 3-0 on the season and in the NFC.
