In today's Audio Vault, Andrew Salciunas honored a boxing legend, had some tremendous audio of Howard Cosell discussing the NFL Strike in 1982, grabbed the audio from the chaos outside Veteran's stadium in a later NFL strike, and said Happy Birthday to Bill Murray. Here was today's Audio Vault lineup.
Rocky Marciano's Final Fight
Rocky Marciano fought his last fight ever on this day in history. On Sepetember 21st, 1955. He retired as the Heavy Weight Champ, a title he held from 1952 until his retirement. And he defended that title in his last fight ever, knocking out Archie Moore in the 9th round. And to honor the date, Andrew pulled the audio of Rocky's knockout win from the vault.
NFL Strike in 1982
Today in 1982 began a 57-day Strike in the NFL. And to mark the occasion, Andrew pulled two pieces of audio from the great Howard Cosell, who broadcasted the games on Monday Nights at the time. One was of Cosell talking about what he did with his Monday nights without a Football Game to call. What Howard did was talk about getting to watch all the shows he usually beat in the ratings. The second piece of audio was of Howard Cosell talking about the strikes and going on an amazing rant about people in bars complaining about the players striking. Both pieces of audio were vintage Howard Cosell.
Report From Outside Veterans Stadium in the 1987 Strike
Since we were on the topic of NFL Strikes, Andrew pulled audio from a different strike. In 1987 the players went on strike again. And this team, the NFL went with replacement players. And deep in the Vault, Andrew found some tremendous audio from a report outside Veteran's Stadium where players, and fans, were protesting the "Scab" players and fans. Philly was a Union town, and many fans rallied behind the Striking players. But with it being Philly, you just know it got crazy. Fans in support of the players screaming at the fans attending the games. Those fans screaming back. It was a wild piece of audio, that Andrew pulled from the Vault.
Happy Birthday Bill Murray
It is Bill Murray's Birthday. And to honor the iconic actor, Andrew pulled what he called the best scene in Bill Murray's career. When he shows up to save the team in the 90s classic Space Jame
