What was brewing with Jen Scordo today? Every day Jen reports on three recent weird and interesting news stories. Today she talked about a traffic jam caused by Alfredo sauce. Someone losing their arm trying to surf on a subway train. And a company making missing voluntary shift punishable by jail time. Here are today's stories.

An Alfredo Sauce Traffic Jam

We have all been stuck in a traffic jam without knowing why traffic was so backed up. But imagine being stuck for hours in traffic, and then learning it was because of Alfredo sauce. That is what happened on the I-55 in Memphis Tennesee. an 18-wheeler tipped over, and spilled Alfredo sauce across the 3-lane highway. It took hours for them to clean up the mess. Backing up traffic all day. And with it being a dairy product, you could imagine the smell of it sitting out in the sun was not too great. Here is a peek at what it looked like at the scene of the accident.

Surfing a Subway is a Bad Idea

A 15-year-old lost his arm in Queens, NY. He and 4 other teens tried to surf on top of a subway train. He fell off, and onto the tracks and another train ran over his arm. They took him to the hospital, but doctors could not save the arm. People trying to ride on the outside of trains has increasingly become an issue. The MTA reported 627 such cases in New York this year. There were only 96 in all of 2021. That is an increase of 553%, and the year isn't over. It caused massive delays across 7 lines of service.

So, please. If you are considering surfing on a subway. Don't. Do not do it. Losing an arm is the least bad thing that could happen. He easily could have died if he fell further onto the tracks. Ride inside the train where you are supposed to be.

A Not so Voluntary Shift At Work

Apparently, the definition of Voluntary has changed. Because one Canadian company has threatened workers, striking from doing "voluntary" overtime shifts, with jail time. Workers at AlumaSafway, a Canadian Scaffolding Company, sent around a memo telling each other to "collectively refuse to work overtime shifts for the purpose of compelling incentives from the Employer, including improvements in compensation or working conditions.”

The company has labeled this action an illegal strike, and told workers they must comply with overtime requests or face termination, hiring bans, and even jail time. it is stipulated in the Union rules with this company that you could be arrested for turning down "voluntary" shifts.

Here I thought voluntary meant optional. But apparently at this company when they say voluntary, they mean mandatory. Maybe if they gave it an accurate name it would be less of an issue. Many of us have been in a position where a boss phrases a demand in the form of a question. But this case takes that to another level.
