Arguably the most powerful athlete in American sports history has been the subject of critique from within his own family on his devotion to his family. Tom Brady has said that he needs more time off because his wife, Gisele Bundchen, does not feel he is devoting equal time to raising their children. Two high priced, superstars in their respective careers, having a face off over who is doing more for the kids. It’s strange we are getting the details of this story and even worse that either side felt we had to hear about it. Talk about “first world problems”…
On January 23rd, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers season ended with a 30-27 loss to the eventual Super Bowl Champion LA Rams. On January 24th the players did exit interviews and their off-season began. He was already given a free pass to train on his own and not required to be at the OTA’s. Training Camp began on July 27th. That means he had 184 free days. No obligation to the team, only personal health sustenance. Six months of vacation. It is a concept that most of us can’t comprehend. Strangely, Tom wasn’t spending enough time with his kids according to his wife even with 6 months off.
I remember a day in sports media when stories like this were not even discussed. The line between sports and celebrity has obviously been blurred. I’m trying to fathom how Tom Brady thought sharing this story would somehow be relatable. Imagine the average guy who is an NFL fan trying to understand how a multi-millionaire with 6 months off isn’t finding enough time to spend caring for his kids. This entire scenario seems suspiciously odd, right? Who is going to throw their bride under the bus like this? I wouldn’t and I doubt most married guys would. So what’s up?
So could Tom Brady be on a 2 week “vacation” during training camp that Roger Goodell “arranged” for him? It certainly seems plausible to me. A guy who was exposed as having questionable commitment to the Buccaneers this off-season now walks out for 2 weeks on this years squad? I’m not buying it. Like everything with Tom Brady there seems to be some level of subterfuge. I refuse to give any Brady story angle the benefit of the doubt.
