Earlier today Jayson Stark hopped on with “The Best Show Ever?” crew to discuss the Phillies. He talked about Bryce Harper’s injury. JT Realmuto turning his season around. The bullpen being rebuilt, and more. Here is some of what he had to say.
On Harper’s Injury
“I didn’t think he was going to play the outfield this year. I never thought that for one second. We talked about it months ago. I think we are looking at a guy who is probably going to need Tommy John’s surgery… I think we are seeing every sign that they are easing him back from this thumb thing. He got the pins out of that thump a week ago, and he’s still only hitting off a tee. That caution is a really important factor here… Think about how violent Harper’s swing is. You need to protect that guy from himself… Why rush him back? Do you guys know they have a better record in the 36 games since he got hurt than they have had in any 36 games with him since he’s been here. That makes no sense.”
On JT Realmuto Turning His Season Around
“I think you can draw a line between when he missed those 3 games in Toronto, and after… Its really interesting to look inside how he’s done it. He had three days off to work on his swing. Whatever happened in those 3 days it got him to restore his balance, get his foot down, and be on time for pretty much everything. Since that date, he leads the NL in hard-hit rate. Almost 54% of the balls hes put in play have been hard hit. His hard rate before that was under 30%. He’s in Aaron Judge territory. He’s hitting the ball harder in the air than at any point in his career. There is not a catcher in the game who does what he’s doing.”
