TAMPA, FLORIDA - JANUARY 16: Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles in action against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first half of the NFC Wild Card Playoff game at Raymond James Stadium on January 16, 2022 in Tampa, Florida.

Eagles Training Camp is just about a week away. Rookies and Veterans alike are set to report by July 26th. So today, Jeff McLane joined the Anthony Gargano Show to preview some of the storylines heading into camp. Andrew Salciunas filled in as host today with Anthony out.

What should we expect from the offense this year? Who has the most pressure on them heading into training camp? Will Jonathan Gannon’s scheme look better this year? Could the Eagles still be in on Jessie Bates? And how physical will the practices be? Jeff McLane got into all this when he joined the show earlier today.

Expectations for the Offense

The Eagles have had a busy off-season. A lot of the improvements were on the defensive end, but the addition of AJ Brown could make a big difference on the offensive side.  But will it be enough to turn this into an elite squad?

McLane spoke about a lot of the weight of getting them there is on the shoulders of Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni. The Eagles have an elite o-line, a damn good WR Group, a top 5 TE, and a decent RB group. The question will be if Jalen Hurts skill, and Nick Sirianni’s scheme can make use of those areas of strength.

What To Expect Out of Jonathan Gannon This Year?

The defense was a bit of a mess last year. the season end number look better than they really were. Games vs third-string QBs inflated what was a very mediocre defense. But was that all on Jonathan Gannon, or did he lack the players to run his scheme?

McLane mentioned today that a major point of focus this offseason was getting him better players. Which is why they went out and signed James Bradberry, Haason Reddick, Kyzir White, and drafted guys like Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean. On paper, this is a far more talented defense now. It will be up to Gannon to make use of that talent.

On How Physical The Practices Will Be

Under Nick Sirianni, the Eagles have become known for not pushing their players very hard in practice. Do not expect that to change in Training Camp according to Jeff McLane. It will be another year of limited contact practices, and most starters not playing in pre-season games.

Last year with this style of coaching they had a slow start, though that may have been for reasons besides the practices. But there were fewer injuries throughout the year compared to what the Eagles have dealt with in the past.

On If The Would Trade for Jessie Bates

There has been some talk that the Eagles could still make a move before the season starts for Bengals Safety Jessie Bates. Jeff McLane did not think it was very likely. But he also mentions that with Howie, anything could be possible.
