PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JANUARY 13: Joel Farabee #86 of the Philadelphia Flyers skates against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Wells Fargo Center on January 13, 2021 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Philadelphia Flyers are locking up one of their young core members. The team signed Joel Farabee to a 6 year extension for $30 million which will begin in 2022. This per the AP’s Stephen Whyno

Farabee was one of the few bright spots for the Flyers last season. The former 14th overall pick took a huge step in his career, posting career highs in goals (20) assists (18) and points (38). He turns 21 in February.

This has been a trend of the Flyers in recent years, to lock up core players before their cap hit reaches a high number. The Flyers did this with Sean Couturier after the 2015 season. Couturier just got off of a 37 point season at the age of 22 when the Flyers signed him to a 6 year extension that quickly became a bargain. The Flyers hope the same will be said about Farabee.
