Could Marc Staal be a potential Flyers target?

The Flyers fell to the Islanders on Monday night in overtime after blowing a 1-0 in the third period. The team is 3-6-1 in their last 10 and are floundering. They are only 2 points behind the Boston Bruins for the final playoff spot, but the Bruins have 5 games remaining against the Sabres while the Flyers have just 3. The question now becomes do the Flyers consider buying at the deadline or not? If they do decide to buy I’ve already written on a few names that the team could consider for blueline help. But Im not NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman joined NHL tonight and discussed the Flyers saying that the popular name from the Predators, Mattias Ekholm, might not be the name the Flyers are after.

“All of a sudden they’re looking at it like ‘are we really going to win it this season?’ And I do think thats been a factor with Ekholm. I don’t have any evidence of this but it wouldn’t surprise me if Philly was one of the teams talking (Ryan) Ellis instead of Ekholm. Because its longer term and they can sort themselves out. I do think one player Philly has had some interest in is Marc Staal.”

Friedman adds that the Flyers may be looking more long term than just this season. Ellis, who is currently on the IR, is signed through 2026-2027 at an AAV of $6.25 million. Mattias Ekholm on the other hand is signed for next season at a very friendly $3.75 million but then you’d have to make a decision on whether or not to extend him.

Marc Staal is a name that is new. Staal isn’t signed past this season, and he is a shell of his old self. Hes just never been the same since taking a shot to his eye from his brother. He was offloaded to the Red Wings ALONG with a second round pick just so the Rangers could get him off their books. He ain’t the answer!

The other interesting nugget didnt come from Friedman, but instead our own John Kincade. Kincade mentioned on “The John Kincade Show” Tuesday morning that hes hearing that there will be a sacrificial lamb at the end of this season. With the Flyers failing to come close to the expectations, someone has to go. While Kincade didn’t mention anyone by name, he did mention this after discussing Flyers assistant Mike Yeo. Kincade also said that Vigneualt is safe.
