NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 17: Connor Bunnaman #82 and the Philadelphia Flyers react following a second period goal by Filip Chytil #72 that made the score 9-0 Rangers at Madison Square Garden on March 17, 2021 in New York City.

The Flyers are in a desperate spot. Ignore the 9-0 embarrassment loss to the Rangers on Tuesday night, this is a team that is floundering. A team that was favored by some to be a true Stanley Cup contender has found itself looking absolutely lost in the past few months. The goaltending position has been a huge question mark. After years of thinking that the organization finally found its savior in net, Carter Hart has the third worst save percentage in the league among goalies who have made at least 10 starts (behind Villie Husso who has an .879 save % for St. Louis. and Marcus Hogberg with a .859 save % for Ottawa.) The argument now has become a chicken or egg type situation. “is it the defense? or the goaltending?”

At this point, it doesn’t matter who is to blame. Something needs to get done. As the Flyers enter Thursday nights game against the Islanders they do so on the outside of the playoff hunt. Its only by 3 points. But that margin is widening. The season isn’t over by any stretch, but its certainly trending in the wrong direction. That’s why Chuck Fletcher needs to act NOW.

Its clear what the Flyers weakness is. I don’t think anyone expected the retirement of Matt Niskanen to have such an impact on this D core, but it clearly has. It looks like every defensemen was taken a GIANT step back. They look lost. Philippe Myers went from a diamond in the rough find by the organization, to the ghost of Oskar Bartulis. And speaking of “Ghost” well….he looks like Ghost. The organization should seriously consider doing to former wunderkind Shayne Gostisbehere what the organization did to draft bust Sam Morin and switching the defensemen to a wing. Using Gostisbehere as a 4th line winger who can play the point on a power play. That’s it. The defense can be saved, but its going to have to happen QUICKLY

Everyday the Flyers don’t make a move, they’re doing the fans and the team an injustice. Obviously, a trade takes two parties. Its not as simple as saying “give me _____ for a 7th round pick” and the other team simply agreeing. Chuck Fletcher is risking waiting so long to make a move, that by the time he does its too late. Right now Chuck Fletcher is instructing the band to continue to play after the ship has already hit the ice berg. The Flyers season can be salvaged, but it needs to happen quickly. It needs to happen now!
