Joe Blanton, forever known as the fifth member of the Four Aces, has retired, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
He went 34-25 with the Phillies from 2008-12 but perhaps his crowning achievement came on October 26, 2008 when he hit his first career home run off of Edwin Jackson.
Blanton was released by the Angels at the end of Spring Training. He signed a minor-league deal with the Athletics but was largely ineffective in two starts with their Triple A affiliate, allowing seven runs in 10 2/3 innings.
Don’t shed too many tears for him, though, as big Joe will still be getting paid $7.5 million from the Angels since he retired after being released. It’s great work if you can get it.
